Marta and her mother are grown- up women who are caught in a vicious circle of toxic emotions- they love each other, hurt each other, then guilt- stricken make up only to get into a new argument again. Their conflicts are the background for Marta’s husband, Jacek’s fight for the happiness of his and Marta’s own family…
The film is very difficult for actors because of its minimalist form – the movements of the camera are submitted to acting. The long shots are meant to create natural tensions between the actors. As a counterpoint to the story itself, the pictures are warm in colours. The anxiety is meant to be the result of the particular scenes, and not the camera movements so as not to suggest anything to the audience.
This film is a kind of reversal of my debut movie, the Welts, but unlike that movie, which delt with the results of the lack of parental love, the Close-ups shows the tragic consequences of the excess of such feelings.
